Foot binding in China called "Lotus feet"

There was a tradition of foot binding in China in the 10th century called "Lotus feet". The ritual was composed of applying painfully tight binding to the feet of young girls to prevent further growth, because small feet were considered as a symbol of beauty and displaying social status. The ideal size of the feet was to be no more than 8-10 cm and  young women chose to violate feet hoping to marry rich. Later this tradition was banned in 1912 by the Chinese government.
